Its a nice place for pretty much everything, including ceremony for a wedding.  If I was getting married, I would get married here except during the summer time (probably not during the hot weather months like on late June, July, or  earlier on September).   Imagine wearing a long coat, a heavy wedding gown  on your wedding day during a sunny summer day.   You get it?  You’d be sweating like a pig.  If you have to marry there during the summer time, then get married early morning (10am) or later in the afternoon (like after 3pm).

Unless the location is your top priority, choose the dream location and a few alternative sites that will be just right for you, so that if necessary you can be flexible. Some location are natural for weddings and offer all the amenities you need. Others rent the space and leave the rest to you, still others are free but you have to make all the arrangements. So, consider your budget, consider the work involved, consider your guests and choose the site that will afford you your dream wedding. The information you gathered, is actually a wonderful preparation for your interviews.

FULL SERVICE WEDDING SITE and FACILITIES

These are venues that can take care of every little detail regarding your ceremony and reception. You’ll still need to attend to your personal needs. You’ll need to attend to the attire, wedding accessories and wedding gifts for each other, family, and wedding attendants.

SITES AVAILABLE on a RENTAL BASIS

Many wedding sites that are available on a rental basis. Some provide the space, others provide tables and chairs too while still other provide linens, tableware, flatware and glassware as well. Most will be honored to be asked and excited to be a contributing part of your wedding.

HOW TO FIND WEDDING SITES

Once you have chosen the type of wedding site you want for your wedding, do the following:

Does the contract include a 3 day cancellation clause? fs – rb – ps* If you plan not to include children in your reception, do not alienate guests who’d rather bring children than miss your wedding. You should provide a babysitting service for such guests.Once you made your choice, you need to receive a written contract signed by the person in charge, and dated. The contract must include all of your responsibilities and all of the responsibilities, warranties and guarantees offered by the facility. Caveat Emptor – Buyer beware! Read each contract very carefully, on, under and above the line. Be sure that you understand it fully and agree with all the terms. If you have questions, concerns, or are uncertain, contact them for clarification.
In most parts of the USA you have 3 days to examine the contract and if you need to, cancel with no penalties.

Broom – Jumping the Broom

Jumping the broom, is a custom that has its roots in Africa to symbolizes the beginning of making a home together.
It took on a deeper meaning when during the days of slavery in the USA, African American couples were not legally permitted to marry.
As a public announcement and a statement of their love and commitment, a man and woman jumped over a broom pronouncing their entrance into matrimony.
They saw the wedding broom not only as the threshold of the Holy Land of Matrimony, but as a means of sweeping away evil from the paths of their lives.
Some used a plain Colonial style broom others wove beautiful flowers, garlands and tied scraps of cloth and white handkerchiefs around the broom handle. The more common and personal the item, the better.

Today, ribbon has replaced the cloth and African-American couples who include this custom in their wedding ceremony use ribbons that coordinate with their wedding colors and silk or satin flowers that match their wedding flowers. When ribbons and artificial flowers are used, the jumping become a a lasting family keepsake.
It is customary to ask a family member or friend to tell the history of this custom. and while they do, the bride and groom together sweep the broom in a circle until the story is finished. They then place the jumping broom on the floor and hold hands and jump over it together.

Cowrie shells

Some African-American brides wear cowrie shell necklaces, and or decorate their attire with cowrie shell because, cowrie shells are believed to encourage fertility. A note of interest: Cowrie shells were once used as money. Today they are used for purification and as a symbol of beauty and power.

Tasting the Four Elements

A less known and less practiced African American wedding tradition, require that the bride and groom taste: lemon as representing the sour, vinegar as representing the bitter, cayenne pepper as representing the hot, and honey as representing the sweet and delicious times of marriage. This ritual dramatizes the “traditional” promise to love “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.”

Sacrament of Matrimony

A ceremony that consists, of at least three biblical readings, the exchange of vows, the exchange of rings, the Prayer of the Faithful, the nuptial blessing, prayers and appropriate music.
The Sacrament usually takes place during a Nuptial Mass in the morning or early afternoon.

Weddings are not scheduled for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, or when Mass is read for the general congregation.

Hold a Rehearsal Lunch or Dinner and Request the Attendance of your Wedding Photographer(s)
If attendance at the wedding rehearsal is not part of the wedding package, you may have to spend a little more to have your photographer at your rehearsal, but this is money well spent. At the rehearsal, decide on where the officiant, couple and bridal party will stand during the ceremony. Get your photographer’s input on this. It is a good idea to invite your photographer to join you at the dinner. This is a good opportunity for the photographer to get to know your bridal party and for them to be comfortable with your photographer.

The Processional
Don’t send your entire bridal party down the aisle together. If you do this, your photographer will good photographs of the person who walks down the aisle first, but may not have enough time to get a good shots of the rest of the bridal party. Instruct your coordinator to space apart each of the bridal party members. For example, send the maid of honor, wait until she is close to the altar before sending the next bridesmaid. When it’s time for the bride to walk down the aisle, a small pause is not a bad thing; after all, you want all eyes to be on the bride and her father or escort. The coordinator should remind each member of the bridal party, particularly the children, to walk slowly, look up and smile at the camera and the guests.

The Ceremony
Many couples incorporate special touches such as lighting a unity candle into the ceremony. In Hawaii, where I live, giving flower lei to family members and special guests during the ceremony is common. Instead of the bride and groom presenting the lei simultaneously, let the bride present the lei first and then the groom.

Couples who have children often include children in the ceremony – by either acknowledging them with a simple hug, giving them a gift or reading a special vow to the child. If you plan to do any of this at your ceremony, make sure that you have communicated this to your photographer. The more prepared your photographer is, the better shots you will get at the end of the day.

The Vows
Many couples today choose to write their own vows. This adds a very personal touch to the ceremony. It is also something you can include in your wedding photo book. It is okay to cry when readying your vows (remember to wear waterproof mascara and to have a Kleenex handy!) The more emotion you show, the better the pictures.

The Rings
When putting the ring on the finger, remember not to cover the ring. Slip the ring on from underneath as opposed to over the finger.

The Kiss
When it is time to kiss the bride, make it last! It’s your first kiss as a married couple – take your time and savor the moment. Hug, swing the bride around – follow your heart.

The Recessional
Couples tend to run down the aisle after the ceremony. This is your moment – enjoy it, walk slowly – there is no hurry. Some of my favorite wedding photographs are of the couples walking down the aisle with flower petals in the air or bubbles around them. Nothing beats the genuine smiles and the happy aura of newlyweds. Allow your photographer time to capture that.

Two Photographers
One photographer cannot be in two places at the same time. One photographer has to move around a lot to get different angles and this can be distracting during the ceremony. No matter how small and simple your ceremony, it is a huge advantage to have two photographers. But make sure that the two photographers work together on a regular basis so that they each know which angles to cover. I shoot weddings with my husband, who is the lead photographer for AinaKai Photography (http://www.ainakai.com), and brides can usually spot our different photography styles. With two photographers you will get double the number of “wow shots,” a greater variety of angles and two different perspectives.

I finally finished an album design that is way overdue.  Thankfully, the mother of the bride is pretty much saying to not rush it since she wants something really nice to have for a memento of her daughter’s wedding.  It took me awhile to do it since I am often not satisfied with the first or second drafts.  Also, I put it aside and come back to  it when  I’m all  refreshed.
